There were two weekly flights: one by Super Starliner, with a stopover at Hamburg on the outbound and return leg, and one by B707, with a stopover in Hamburg only on the return leg.
The trip now only takes 19 hours and 10 minutes, of which only 17 hours and 40 minutes is flight time, instead of 50 hours previously via the Indies.
To celebrate the occasion, the Post Office stamped each parcel bound for Japan with a commemorative stamp.
These aircraft are equipped with 20 seat-beds in First Class and 44 seats in Tourist class.
